Veterans Appreciation Day in Cherokee

The Cherokee County Veteran Affairs Office will be hosting this year's seventh annual Cherokee County Veterans Appreciation Day to be held on Saturday at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the main ceremony at 1 p.m.

The theme will be "Fallen Heroes of Iowa."

"Fallen Heroes of Iowa" is a traveling display of the 70 Iowa men and women who have given their all since 9/11.

Cherokee County Veteran Affairs Director Dana Evens remarked, "'The Fallen Heroes of Iowa' display is equivalent to our Vietnam Wall."

The display will arrive in Cherokee on Friday and be set-up in by 5 p.m. and will be open to the public and lighted so visitors can attend anytime during the night.

There will also be a free lunch as part of Saturday's events.

Scheduled to be in attendance on Veteran's Appreciation Day are representatives from the South Dakota Veteran Administration Hospital of Sioux Falls, Iowa Veteran Administration Regional Office, County and National Veteran Service Officers, Sioux City Vet Center, Iowa Workforce Development, and VA Pension Center and the Mobile Vet Center RV.

There will be music; a craft show and businesses from around the area are invited to participate and set-up at no charge.

The Cherokee American Legion will also have a map on display that coordinate to the hometowns of the fallen soldiers.

There will also be display of flags adorned with dog tags with the names of all the fallen.

To help with the Cherokee County VA's fundraising efforts there is currently a raffle be held for a 46 inch Toshiba Flat-screen TV. Chances are $5 and you can get your chance at the Cherokee Veteran's Affairs Office and the drawing will be held on Veteran's Appreciation Day.

Volunteers are also needed to read the names of the Fallen during the main ceremony, if there is a particular name that you want to read it can be arranged.

Cherokee County Veterans Affairs Director Dana Evans explains, "Were hoping for a lot of community involvement this year to make this event the best one yet. There are over 10,000 veterans in Cherokee County ranging from 18 to 93 years of age. Let all show are appreciation to our Cherokee County Veterans."
