Warriors lose, 1-0, at State Tourney

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

DES MOINES - Two sixth-inning errors sent defending champion Davis County of Bloomfield into the Class 2-A semifinals of the state baseball tournament. The Mustangs improved to 42-1 with a 1-0 escape against Alta-Aurelia on Saturday, despite the pitching of the Warriors' Austin Delp, who allowed just two hits.

Davis County's Clint Foster reached safely in the bottom of the sixth inning when Alta-Aurelia's first baseman bobbled a throw. Foster stole second and raced home when Calvin Utt hit a hard grounder that went between the third baseman's legs.

Foster eluded the reach of catcher Alex Stephan as he dove for the plate.

"At the beginning, I thought it was going to be a really close play," Foster said. "I was just thinking of any possible way to get around the tag."

Alta-Aurelia got the potential tying run on base when Jalen Henningsen led off the seventh inning with a single. But he was caught trying to steal second.

"I'm kicking myself right now for doing it," Warriors coach Dan Wendel said. "I wish I would have just bunted him over and played the safe route."

University of Iowa recruit Calvin Mathews, like Delp, threw a two-hitter for Davis County, improving his season record to 13-0 with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

"Our bats weren't working the best today," Mathews said. "I just knew as a pitcher I had to go out there and keep the score low."

Henningsen had both of the Warrior base hits, doubling in the 4th inning in addition to his 7th inning single.

The Warriors finished their season with a 23-11 mark, closing their season with a loss to Davis County at the State Tournament for the second year in a row.

The game marked the last one for a group of Warrior seniors - Henningsen, Delp, Jaden Holton, Neil Marshall, A.J. Lange and James Curbow - who played a large part in the team's success the last four years, as the team made the trip to the State three times during their High School years.
