Larry Watts 75, Cherokee, was killed instantly at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in a multi-vehicle traffic accident north of Holstein on U.S. Highway 59 in Ida County, in a road construction zone.
According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, Watts' car was the last vehicle in a lineup of vehicles that were southbound on Highway 59 and were stopped, waiting for a pilot car to escort them through a one-lane work stoppage zone south of 110th Street in Ida County when a semi truck-trailer driven by Gordon Draskovic 46, of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, failed to stop and ran into the rear of Watts' vehicle.
According to investigating officers, Watts' vehicle was then pushed into a vehicle driven by Shari Ann Shontz 52, Holstein, and a chain reaction of collisions resulted, involving three other vehicles, driven by Warren Kellogg 53, Cherokee, Mark Alan Scheef Jr. 25, Cherokee, and Bradley Olson 56, Lytton.
Watts was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, and Shontz, Kellogg and Schleef were all transported to the Cherokee Regional Medical Center for treatment of possible injuries, according to law enforcement reports.
The crash remains under investigation.
