Cherokee 'Relay For Life' begins Friday

The schedule of events for the 2012 American Cancer Society's Relay For Life at Koser Spring Lake Park this weekend in Cherokee features many poignant and entertaining activities.

From 5-7 p.m. Friday will be a Community Supper and the Education Tent will be open to the public.

Music by Charlie Leissler will be from 5-5:30 p.m., games for all ages from 5-7 p.m., and a Tae Kwon Do demonstration by Jung's Tae Kwon Do will be from 5:30-6 p.m.

From 6-6:30 p.m. will be musical entertainment by Libby Peterson, followed by a Basket Auction at 6:30 p.m. with Auctioneer Don Pitts.

Opening Ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. with an introduction by Myla Stoneking, the National Anthem sung by Libby Peterson, invocation by Pastor Jim Steen, Recognition of Corporate Sponsors, a Quilt Raffle drawing, and the Cancer Survivors Recognition and Victory Lap.

At 8:45 p.m., the moving Luminaria Ceremony will be held near the Main Shelter with a torch lap by Jodi and Ty Schlichting and Marc Steward, and the poignant song "Relay" written and performed by Cherokee Troubador, Charlie Leissler.

As a special event this year, a family movie will also be shown on large screen, including popcorn and refreshments.

From 10 p.m. to midnight is the popular Night Vigil featuring all those who wish to walk at anytime, with or without a team.

The Relay will continue after midnight as a Candlelight Vigil.
