AMES - From July 13 through July 15, the Cherokee American Legion Family, which consists of the American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion held their yearly Department Convention.

This year the Department Convention was held in Ames. Next July it will be held in Sioux City. Four members from Cherokee Unit and Post 230 attended. The two Auxiliary delegates were LuAnn Wittrock and Claudia Brown, and the two Legion delegates from Cherokee Post were Bob Wittrock and David Brown.

Bob Wittrock was installed as the newly formed 9th District Sons of the American Legion Adjutant. David Brown was installed as the New 9th District Vice Commander for the American Legion.

Claudia Brown had the honor of being installed as the New 2012 - 2013 9th District American Legion Auxiliary President.

The 9th District consists of 13 counties and has 72 units and over 100 posts.

The 9th District American Legion marching group also got second place in the parade held in downtown Ames on the Saturday night of the convention.

This won them a prize of $250. David Brown was a banner bearer and Bob Wittrock marched with the Color Guard.

President Claudia also has the honor of picking projects to help the Veterans by raising monies.

A couple of her main projects this year are helping the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., acquire handicap accessible picnic tables and also to help the Omaha VA Hospital by raising monies to help them with their homeless program.

Her motto this year is "Saluting our Flag Saluting our Veterans." Her colors are Red White, and Blue.

Anyone wanting more information on any of these projects and how you can help, contact Claudia at 712/229-7934.
