The presentation of a plaque and Patriots pin was made by Becky Coady, the State Director of ESGR, and Schoon said he was surprised and humbled by the honor.
Rex Hofer, the ESGR Chair 1 for Area 1 (Northwest Iowa) was also present for the brief ceremony, as were ESGR Ombudsman Leo Klotz of Cherokee, several Schoon Construction employees and friends, and Tango, a five month-old "service dog in training," who accompanied Coady to the gathering.
Schoon was selected to receive The Patriot Award by the Iowa Committee of the ESGR - an agency of the Department of Defense - based upon a nomination from Klotz, who is a retired Master Sergeant who has worked as an ESGR Ombudsman at Schoon Construction since March of 1998.
In his nomination, Klotz stated:
"My boss, LeRoy Schoon, supports my every effort in supporting ESGR. I have full use of his vehicles, office, telephones, FAX machines, computers, and any support from his office staff to fulfill my job as an Ombudsman. If I need any time off for an ESGR case, or to go to school to advance my education for ESGR, he is in full support in letting me off with pay.
"LeRoy also supports hiring any veteran who applies for a job at his company. I hope you would consider LeRoy Schoon for an award..."
