ALTA - Several Cherokee County Fire Departments took part in a major burn exercise here on Sunday, as two wooden elevators at Ag Partners - estimated to have been built in 1959 - were burned to the ground in the exercise.

Twenty-five fire departments from seven counties took part in the burn, including those from Aurelia, Cherokee, Marcus, Cleghorn and Quimby. Other Fire Departments included Alta, Storm Lake, Sioux Rapids, Newell, Truesdale, Rembrandt, Lawton, Moville, Anthon, Galva, Holstein, Ida Grove, Odebolt, Orange City, Danbury, Early, Schaller, Bronson and Everly.

Additional agencies that participated in the exercise included the Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office, the City of Alta, the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center ambulance crew and the Buena Vista County Emergency Management Agency.

BV County Emergency Management Coordinator Aimee Barritt said, "The training gives firemen the opportunity to practice working together at a large fire and how to manage the water supply - which is always an issue at a large fire."
