MARCUS - Running back Andrew Hoefling and quarterback Tanner Utesch accounted for three touchdowns apiece to lead Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn to a decisive 48-12 pasting of a solid Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire team here Friday night, in a game marking the Eagles' first foray into 8-man football.
If the game was any indication of the potency of the talented MMC senior-laden squad, Eagle fans are going to be in for some exciting times this 2012 football season.
The season opener for both clubs saw the Eagles strike fast and furious on the way to total 240 yards rushing on 36 carries, and Utesch complete a super efficient 7-9 passing for 103 yards and three TDs. MMC QB Dylan Spieler completed 2-2 passes for 36 yards and one TD.
Three of Utesch's TD passes were in the capable hands of fullback Jacob Meehan, totaling 35 yards. Meehan also rushed seven times for 66 yards, and Connor Holmes lugged the ball six times for 40 yards for the winners.
Spieler's TD pass went to Eric Nelson for 24 yards.
The Titans scored both their TDs on short runs, including a 1-yard run by Kyle Dalen, and a 2-yard run by Carter Williamson. GT-RA rushed 34 times for 146 yards against the stifling Eagle defense, with Williamson leading the way with 11 carries for 62 yards, and QB Blaze Alesch carrying it 15 times for 20 yards.
Alesch was 3-7 passing for 32 yards and one interception by alert MMC defender Meehan. Justin Theisen had a fumble recovery for the winners.
Tyler Prunty paced the stout MMC defense with eight tackles, followed by Jarod Gross seven, Meehan seven, and Spieler six.
Nathan Zubrod had two rushing two-point conversions for MMC, and Spieler kicked two PATS in the game.
The 1-0 Eagles, obviously grasping the intricacies of 8-man football under first-year coach Kyle Oswald, play at West Bend-Mallard Friday.
