SOS wins opener over West Sioux

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

HAWARDEN - The South O'Brien Wolverine football team opened up the 2012 season with a 13-0 win over the West Sioux Falcons here on Friday.

The game was a back-and-forth affair in the first quarter, with the Falcons retaining possession of the ball for all but six plays of the quarter.

The second quarter started off well for the Wolverines as Zach Nieman scored on a 51-yard pitch play with 12:10 to go in the second quarter. Michael Callahan attempted the PAT kick but was off wide left. The 2nd quarter finished like it started with Brett Puhrmann scoring on a 93-yard punt return with 1:56 left in the half. Michael Callahan kicked the PAT to make the score 13-0.

The third quarter was all Wolverines. The team drove the field on a seven-minute drive down to the 5-yard line but came up short and didn't score. The fourth quarter held more of the same as the offense of the Wolverines was inside the 20 yard line two more times and failed to score.

Statistically, the Wolverines put up 293 yards rushing on 47 carries, averaging 6.2 yards per carry. Kody Nelson was 1-10 passing with 8 yards. Marcus Atkinson led the rushing effort with 138 yards on 25 carries. Zach Nieman carried the ball seven times for 113 yards. Austin Rohrs had 10 carries for 34 yards.

The Wolverines held West Sioux to 88 yards rushing and 39 yards passing. Austin Rohrs and Bryce Kelleher led the way with six solos and three assists each. Zach Nieman had four solo tackles and one assist.

South O'Brien coach Mark Fuhrman said, "While it was a good win, we have a lot of work to do. We fumbled the ball five times (lost one) , and we need to do a better job of protecting it. Defensively, we were out of position at times. We really need to concentrate on doing our jobs and working together as a team. "Offensively, we need to finish those drives and put more points on the board.

Hinton comes to Paullina for the Wolverines' home opener on Friday, and Coach Fuhrman said, " We are going to have our hands full with a good Hinton ball club."

The Blackhawks beat tradition-rich Le Mars Gehlen last week to post a 1-0 record.
