MMC tops tough West Bend-Mallard

WEST BEND - The District 1 Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn football team, new to the 8-player game this season, took a big bite out of the ranks here Friday night with a hard-fought 38-32 over defending District 2 champion West Bend- Mallard.

Efficient Eagle quarterback Tanner Utesch completed 6-10 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns to pace the MMC offense, with lead running back Andrew Hoefling rushing for two more TDs to help outdistance the traditionally tough Wolverines on their home turf.

MMC fullback Jake Meehan also accounted for two Eagle TDs, including a 48-yard run and a 24-yard pass from Utesch. Mehhan caught three passes for 37 yards to lead MMC receivers. Connor Holmes scored a TD on a 20-yard pass from Utesch, and Isaiah Petersen had one catch for a scintillating 74-yard TD off the arm of Utesch.

MMC rushed the ball a whopping 62 times for 353 yards, with Hoefling totaling 19 hauls for 140 yards, Meehan 16 for 98, and Utesch 16 for 89. Holmes had nine carries for 41 yards.

Wolverine QB Jesse Zinnel completed 14-20 passes for 220 yards and three TDs, two of those to his twin brother Jason, who caught eight passes for 114 yards. Jesse Zinnel also hooked up with Ashton Fehr for a 57-yard TD. Jason Zinnel also returned a fumble for a TD.

Nathan Zubrod led the feisty MMC defense with 17 tackles, followed by Justin Theisen 11, Hoefling eight, Jared Gross eight, and Tyler Prunty seven. Hoefling also had a pass interception.

Under first-year head coach Kyle Oswald, the 2-0 Eagles host 0-2 Remsen St. Mary's Friday night in Marcus.
