MOVILLE - The South O'Brien boys team took first place at Tuesday's Woodbury Central Cross Country Invitational Meet, run on the Meadows Golf Course here.
The Wolverines scored a team total of 58 points to edge host Woodbury Central, which totaled 63 team points.
Individually, South O'Brien senior Daniel Patterson finished 5th, covering the 5k course in a time of 19:34.17; teammate Austin Dunnick was 7th, in a time of 19:40.22; Luke Hoger was 10th, in 20:13.67; and Ben Aberson was 11th, with a time of 20:23.47.
The Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union boys, who finished 8th with 166 team points, were led by junior Ben Brady, whose time of 21:30 was good for 18th place, and his teammates incuded Zack Kellogg, who ran a time of 21:59, good for 28th place; Roman Galles (22:19, 33rd); Nathan Ruba (25:38, 53rd); and Mark Peters (26:38, 58th).
MMC Coach Mark Fisher said he thought despite the weather conditions causing slower times across the board, the MMC/RU boys really showed improvement Tuesday and continue to get better.
The MMC/RU girls also ran, and though they didn't qualify for the team race, a highlight was the performance of junior Nicki Schwartz, who medaled in 8th place with a time of 19:11.77 for the 4k distance. Teammate Kayla Brady, a freshman, ran the course in 22:11, good for 30th place, while Sarah Bird's time was 22:59, putting him in 34th and Kim Schroeder finished in a time of 25:36, good for 51st place.
The South O'Brien girls finished 6th in the Girls Team Standings with 116 points, led by junior Halee Rahbusch, who took the individual championship with her time of 17:44.52; Arielle Wohlert was 33rd, with a time of 22:35.76; Miranda Liebsack was 35th, with a time of 22:59.39; Olivia Sickelka was 40th, in 23:47.26; and Rebecca Thiel was 44th, with a time of 24:09.
