As the Cherokee Yacht Club Committee nears its new fundraising goal of $400,000, a few enjoyable events are planned yet this month to put the volunteer group's goal over the top.
The group had reached its initial goal of $375,000, but the construction bids came in higher than anticipated, bumping the fundraising goal by $25,000.
According to Cherokee Yacht Club Committee members who have been conducting a fundraiser for several months to pay for that new facility, work is expected to begin yet this fall, with completion in early spring.
An estimated $375,000 was raised through donations by the Cherokee Yacht Club Committee to pay for the construction of the Yacht Club building and other related Park amenities, with the City responsible for extending the utilities, parking and sidewalk improvements to the site, which are estimated to cost $40,000.
As a result of the higher bids, the Yacht Club Committee is continuing its fundraising efforts through September and encourages all those who have yet to donate to such a worthy cause to please consider doing so. The goal now is to raise $400,000 to complete the project, according to Committee members.
The tax deductible donations can be made to "Cherokee Community Foundation-Spring Lake" and mailed or dropped off at City Hall at 416 W. Main St., Cherokee, Iowa 51012. For donations of $1,000 or more, donors names will be recognized on a permanent plaque or brick in the Park, and a Page 1 photo featured in the Chronicle Times.
Committee members said they realize that some folks may feel they want to help out by donating to the Yacht Club project, but need to do so on a much smaller scale. So, they are going to have a little "spoof" on the original Yacht Club origins and issue "Sailing Permits" available for a minimum donation of $20. In addition, $20 contributors will receive a FREE official Yacht Club t-shirt! These t-shirts are commissioned through Darren's Clothing Company, another local business. They are high quality fabric and have the Yacht Club logo embroidered on them. Just contact any committee member to place your order.
Also in September the Committee will continue with its "September Blitz" and hold a radio-thon with KCHE Radio. That date will be Thursday, Sept 20. The Committee encourages all listeners to call the radio station that day to share your stories of the Park and to make your pledges if you have not done so already. They will be auctioning off some Yacht Club rentals that day and also selling t-shirts.
Haselhoff Construction of Cherokee was low bid on the Yacht Club at $335,275 for the completed building.
Also included in the Committee's plan are building furnishings and equipment, a new open shelter on the lake's east side, and various other Park amenities, including proper landscaping, etc.
Among enhancements of the new Yacht Club are a larger heated area more user friendly in the winter, large patio area to accommodate more people outside, more spacious and user-friendly kitchen, handicap accessible, large storage area, safer location so children do not have to cross the street to access the playground, and the new outdoor shelter.
"We really hope to finish up the fundraising portion of this project by the very end of September, so if you have been thinking you want to donate but have been putting it off, we would certainly appreciate your pledges and donations at this time," said Committee Co-Chair Sheree Hausmann.
