Utesch, Hoefling pepper endzone with 10 TDs

LAKE PARK - The scoreboard flashed like a Disco ball here Friday night as the undefeated Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn football team outlasted a good Harris-Lake Park team 72-64 in overtime in 8-player District action.

The thrilling yet exhausting win pushes MMC's season record to 5-0, while HLP falls to 3-2.

Once again, senior quarterback Tanner Utesch and senior tailback Andrew Hoefling paced the aggressive Eagle offense, with Utesch rushing for four touchdowns and passing for three more, and Hoefling totaling four TDs on two rushes, one pass reception, and a stunning 75-yard kick-off return to paydirt.

For the night, Utesch rushed 13 times for 107 yards and four TDs, the longest for 35 yards, and completed 14-27 passes for 218 yards, three TDs and one pick. Hoefling rushed 20 times for 152 yards and two TDs, the longest for 37 yards, and caught five passes for 77 yards and one TD for 29 yards.

Isaiah Petersen was on the receiving end of two Utesch TD passes to finish with four catches for 42 yards and two TDs, including a 23-yard job. Jake Meehan caught four passes for 70 yards and rushed five times for 21 yards for the winners.

Kade Heikens led the host Wolves in scoring, rushing 23 times for 120 yards and three TDs. He also caught eight passes for 138 yards and two TDs, the longest for 47 yards. Eli Ihnen caught 12 passes for 157 yards and two TDs, the longest 15 yards. Colion Brons also scored for HLP on a 10-yard run.

Wolves QB Brons completed 24-36 passes for 316 yards and five TDs, and one pick.

Nathan Zubrod led the MMC defense with 26 tackles, followed by Jared Gross 15, Levi Letsche 13, Dylan Spieler 13, Tyler Prunty 13, Nate Rassel 12, and Justin Theisen 11 and one fumble recovery. Spieler also recovered a fumble.

Ihnen led the HLP tacklers with 16, while Tanner Hiveley had 13, and Brady Van Iperen tallied 11.

Van Iperen also had a pass interception.

Things get easier for MMC Friday as the Eagles travel to 1-4 Whiting, while the Wolves play at 2-3 River Valley.
