MILFORD - South O'Brien's game at Okoboji Friday proved to be a chance to get back on the winning track, and 33 unanswered points in the second quarter and 13 in the third quarter proved to be too much for the Okoboji Pioneers, as the Wolverines erased an early 7-6 deficit and went on to win, 52-7.
The Wolverines totaled 300 yards on 49 rusing attempts, with Zach Nieman leading all rushers with 132 yards rushing on 18 carries, and he also scored three touchdowns. Austin Rohrs added a touchdown, along with his 74 yards on eight carries. Kody Nelson connected on a 48-yard touchdown pass and a 31-yard touchdown pass to Matt DeVos, and Nelson ended the night 4-4 passing for 109 yards.
Defensively, Sam Weber, Kelvan Lansink and Patrick Wubben each intercepted a pass; Bryce Kelleher and Matt DeVos each had one sack; and Kody Petrich recovered a fumble. Gunnar Klinker was in on eight stops and Austin Rohrs was in on seven.
This week the Wolverines have their Homecoming contest against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, and Coach Mark Fuhrman says, " It is going to be essential that we maintain our focus all week with all the activities going on. We are also going to have to keep improving in the blocking and tackling departments. HMS is a good solid ball club, and it will demand our best game in order to keep to the winning ways."
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, preceded by a Tailgate party from 5 - 7 p.m.
Coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen will take place in the east gym at Paullina on Thursday night. Queen candidates are Kaitlyn Aberson, Terran Ebel, Shelbi Holtkamp, Perri Nieuwenhuis and Emily Riedemann; King candidates are Matt DeVos, Hunter Fiddelke, Will Friedrichsen, Kody Nelson and Sam Weber.
