RV girls win Regional VB opener

KINGSLEY - The River Valley volleyball team traveled here on Tuesday to take on host Kingsley-Pierson in first-round Class 1A Regional Tournament play, and the Wolverines traded wins back and forth on their way to an exciting 3-2 victory over the Panthers (7-20).

RV took the first set, 25-23; K-P the second set, 25-17; RV the third, 28-26; K-P the fourth set, 25-23; and River Valley the fifth and deciding set by a score of 15-12.

RV Coach Pamela Frederiksen said, "It was a very well-played match. I was very proud of the girls for remaining under control when the score was close. We continued to play our game, and we came out on top."

Olivia Goettsch had eight kills for the Wolverines while Alysa Georgopoulos added six; Payton Goettsch had 22 digs, Olivia Goettsch 20 and Georgopoulos 19; and Olivia Goettsch and Georgopoulos were outstanding in blocking Panther shots, with Goettsch blocking 12 and Georgopoulos 11.

The senior Georgopoulos also had three ace serves in a 19-21 serving performance, followed by Jenna Knaack 20-23, Payton Goettsch 12-13 and one ace, Olivia Goettsch 10-12, Brianna Eades 7-9, and Jordain Volkert was a perfect 19-19 serving.

The Wolverines (4-29) now play LeMars Gehlen Catholic (18-10) in second round action at Gehlen on Tuesday.
