AURELIA - The Alta-Aurelia Warriors gave a valiant effort Friday night, but they fell a little short as they lost the final game of their football season, 20-8, to West Sioux, in a game played on Aurelia's Valor Field.
The Warriors took to the air more than they usually have Friday night, as QB Joe Napierala attempted 29 passes. The senior connected successfully on 16 of his throws, good for 148 yards. and had none intercepted.
Garrett VanHouten rushed 15 times for 39 yards, a seven-yard touchdown and a two-point conversion; Alex Stephan, also a senior, ran nine times for 35 yards and also caught six passes for 52 yards, Jeremiah Ruby had five receptions for 32 yards, and Mitchel McDonald snared three balls, good for 58 yards.
VanHouten led the Warriors' defense with 11 total tackles, while Michael Stender had seven and Manuel Murillo six. Jackson Rosenthal had five tackles and also intercepted a pass.
For the season, Napierala completed 66 of 147 pass attempts (44.8%), threw three touchdown passes, and had four passes intercepted. Garrett Van Houten ran the ball 181 times for 747 yards (4.1 ave.) and scored seven touchdowns; Manuel Murillo gained 374 yards on 82 attempts, for an average gain of 4.6 yards, and he scored three touchdowns; and Alex Stephan gained 251 yards on 53 carries, an average gain of 4.7, and scored four TDS on the ground.
Stephan also led the team in receiving, catching 21 passes , good for 265 yards and two touchdowns. Mitchel McDonald caught 12 passes for 126 yards, and Jeremiah Ruby caught 11 passes for 112 yards and one touchdown.
On the defensive side, Jackson Rosenthal was in on 81 total tackles this season, followed by Michael Stender with 73 and Garrett Van Houten with 67.
The Warriors finished their season with a 1-8 overall mark, and were 1-6 in the District.
