4th-ranked Morningside Mustangs stay unbeaten

Schuck scores 2 more TDs

HASTINGS, Neb. - Morningside outscored No. 14 Hastings College, 53-23, in a battle for first place in the GPAC standings last Saturday in Hastings. The Mustangs rolled up 563 yards total offense while handing the Broncos their first loss of the season.

Mustang quarterback Joel Nixon amassed 428 yards of total offense, including 380 yards passing. Nixon threw five touchdown passes with scoring strikes of six yards to Austin Klett, three and 11 yards to Joel McCabe, and two and 21 yards to Kyle Schuck.

Klett is the son of former Aurelia High School basketball standout Marcia Winterhof.

Jon Halvorson rushed for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns with scoring runs of five and 11 yards. Fred Jones scored the Mustangs' other touchdown on a one-yard run to open the scoring with 11:56 left in the first quarter.

McCabe led the Mustangs' receivers with eight catches for 158 yards, while Schuck also had a 100-yard game with four catches for 108 yards. Jake Allen added a career-high eight receptions for 93 yards.

Schuck, a 6-2, 180 lb. junior wide receiver from Cherokee, had his third 100-yard game of the season with a four-catch, 108-yard performance against Hastings. Two of his receptions went for touchdowns, with a two-yard catch in the third quarter and a 21-yard catch in the fourth stanza. Schuck also had a 40-yard reception on the Mustangs' opening offensive possession to set up their first touchdown of the game and caught a 45-yard pass in the second quarter to set up their final touchdown of the first half.

He had back-to-back 100-yard games earlier this season, with five receptions for 102 yards in the Mustangs' 35-10 victory against Nebraska Wesleyan and eight catches for 146 yards in Morningside's 42-0 win against Midland University. Schuck is the Mustangs' second leading receiver with 26 catches for 445 yards and seven touchdowns, and tops the team with an average of 17.1 yards per catch.

Schuck has 57 pass receptions for 972 yards and 13 touchdowns for an average of 17.1 yards per catch during his Morningside career.
