As the temperatures cool and campers become winterized, the Cherokee County parks are preparing for the winter weather.
Starting Thursday access to water for camping purposes will cease at Martin's Access, Silver Sioux Recreation Area, Steineke Area, and Ranney Knob. Restroooms and showerhouses will also be closed at Silver Sioux and Martin's Access.
The park roads at Ranney Knob and the north gate at Martin's Access will be closed from approximately Dec. 1 through March 31.
In addition, entrance gates at Silver Sioux Recreation Area and Pearse Access will be closed whenever snowy or icy conditions make travel on the park roads unsafe.
Visitors to these parks will have to park at the gate and enter on foot since no motorized vehicles are permitted on park roads when the gates are closed. ATVs and snowmobiles are prohibited in state and county parks, unless they are part of a marked or designated trail.
Hunting is allowed in most Cherokee County park areas from Sept. 15 through May 20. Please visit the Cherokee County Conservation Board website at www.cherokeecountyparks.com for more information on hunting our county areas.
The Lodge at Silver Sioux and cabins at Martin's Access are open year-round and will not be affected.
