The incomparable 12-0 Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn football Eagles, unranked and ignored much of this, their first year of playing the 8-player game this season, continued to respond and soar with a thrilling 42-38 come-from-behind win over #1 Newell-Fonda here Friday night in State Playoff Quarterfinal action.

The #7 Eagles play 12-0 Exira-Elkhorn-Kimballton in the Semifinals at noon Thursday in the Cedar Falls UNI Dome, with the Finals on tap for all classes Thursday and Friday, Nov. 15-16.

MMC's huge win came on a 27-yard TD pass from QB Tanner Utesch to receiver Dylan Spieler with about 20 seconds left to play after the home Mustangs had scored the go-ahead TD with 45 seconds left to play, making the score 38-34 Mustangs.

Refusing to be stopped, the Eagles then advanced downfield on just three plays, culminating in the efficient Utesch's timely pass to Spieler, who broke away from two defenders at the 5-yard line to burst into the end zone, leaving the shell-shocked Mustangs with just a futile 17 seconds left in the game.

The Eagles also tallied three TDs rushing, with Hoefling scoring two, the longest from 17 yards out, while ringing up 21 carries for 92 yards. Jared Gross scored MMC's other rushing TD and, along with Hoefling and Lee Hueser, racked up one two-point conversion apiece in the game.

The Mustangs scored five rushing TDs, with Brady Bohe scoring three while carrying the ball 18 times for 96 yards. Jonathon Johnson scored two rushing TDs and hauled the ball 12 times for 128 yards. Dalton Anderson also scored on a TD pass from QB Zac Sievers, who completed 8-19 passes for 182 total yards.

Dylan Rolfes paced the MMC defense with 13 tackles, while Tyler Prunty had 12, Connor Holmes eight, and Jake Meehan, Nate Rassel, Gross, and Hoefling seven each. Rolfes also had a crucial fumble recovery for the opportunistic Eagles.

Rigo Johnson led the N-F defenders with 18 tackles, followed by Gabe Podraza 13, Bohe 13, Tom Devereaux seven, and Andrew Temple seven.

MMC continues down the tourney trail as undefeated District 1 Champions, while Newell-Fonda hangs up the spikes as undefeated District 2 Champs.
