The City of Cherokee wishes to invite citizens to review and consider two housing repair programs available to Cherokee citizens to make essential repairs to their homes. Home owners with low to moderate incomes may be eligible.
The first program is the City's Community Development Block Grant program that is available in a target neighborhood that is generally north of East Main Street, east of Highway 59, west of Saratoga Street and south of Linn and Fountain Streets. A map is available in City Hall to determine if your home is included in the target neighborhood.
Forgivable loans up to $30,000 are available to qualified homeowners (applicant must live in the home that is to be rehabbed) through this program to address structural, roof, insulation, windows, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and lead abatement issues.
The second program is through the Siouxland Interstate Metropolitan Planning Council (SIMPCO) which is administering a Federal Home Loan Bank grant in the five-county area including Cherokee and Cherokee County. This program is available to owner/occupants for forgivable loans up to $15,000 for similar repairs as listed above.
Provided the applicant continues to live at the residence for five years, the loan is completely forgiven. If the applicant moves from the home sooner, a percentage of the loan is forgiven -- subject to the number of years the applicant continued to live in the home after repairs were made.
