SIOUX CITY - Morningside put the finishing touches on a 10-0 regular season when it crushed city rival Briar Cliff University 62-0 Saturday at Memorial Field to improve its all-time record against the Chargers to 10-0.
The Mustangs amassed 617 yards total offense with an equal mix of 313 yards rushing and 304 yards passing. The Morningside defense held the Chargers to just 156 yards total offense, including a negative 19 yards rushing.
Joel Nixon passed for 262 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown to finish with 310 yards total offense.
Nixon threw a pair of 20-yard TD passes to Cherokee Washington graduate Kyle Schuck and also tossed a 21-yard scoring pass to Joel McCabe. Schuck led the Mustangs' receivers with six catches for 94 yards, while Fred Jones rushed for a season high 73 yards and two touchdowns with scoring runs of 21 and eight yards.
Morningside finished the regular season with an undefeated 10-0 record for the second time in school history. The Mustangs also posted a 10-0 regular season record in 2005 and eventually reached the semifinal round of the NAIA Championship Series to finish the campaign with a record of 12-1.
Morningside finished the regular season with three straight shutouts and has blanked four of its 10 opponents this season.
Morningside will host Montana Tech in first-round NAIA Playoff action at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City this Saturday, with a scheduled kickoff time of 1 p.m.
