SIOUX CITY - 3rd-ranked Morningside defeated 14th-ranked Montana Tech 40-35 in a high scoring NAIA Championship Series opening round shootout here last Saturday.
The Mustangs moved on despite allowing season highs of 35 points and 517 yards total offense. The Mustangs, now 11-0, trailed for the first time all season as they fell behind 13-0 before storming back with a big second quarter.
Kyle Schuck, a 6-2, 180 lb. junior wide receiver from Cherokee Washington High School, was the Mustangs' leading pass receiver with four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown in their 40-35 victory against Montana Tech in the first round of the NAIA Championship Series. His touchdown came on a 10-yard reception in the second quarter for his team-high 16th touchdown of the season. Schuck, a first-team All-GPAC selection this season, has 46 receptions for 720 yards and 16 touchdowns for an average of 15.7 yards per catch. For his career, Schuck now has 77 pass receptions for 1,247 yards and 22 touchdowns, an average of 16.2 yards per catch.
The Mustangs now play Southern Oregon University in a quarterfinal playoff game at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon, and the game will be broadcast on KWSL 1470 A. and KMSC 92.9 FM.
