SIOUX CITY - Morningside defeated 10th-ranked Southern Oregon 47-44 in overtime in last Saturday's NAIA Championship Series quarterfinal round game in Sioux City, in an offensive shootout where Southern Oregon amassed 587 yards total offense and Morningside had 505 yards total offense.
The Mustangs won the game on a four-yard touchdown pass from Joel Nixon to Joel McCabe after Southern Oregon was forced to settle for a field goal in its overtime possession.
Nixon accounted for 452 yards total offense with 346 yards passing and 106 yards rushing to earn the Offensive Player of the Game award, while Cole Boger had 10 tackles and a 46-yard touchdown interception return en route to the Defensive Player of the Game award.
Nixon had a six-yard touchdown run and threw touchdown passes of 19 yards to Josh Gaedke, nine yards to Jared Masterson, eight yards to Kyle Schuck, and four yards to McCabe. Morningside also scored a touchdown on a five-yard run by Fred Jones.
McCabe led the Mustangs' receivers with 10 pass receptions for 97 yards, while Cherokee Washington alum Schuck led the team with 154 reception yards on nine catches.
Ben Rickard topped the Mustangs' tackle chart with 15 tackles, including 12 solo stops. Aaron Roberg had 12 tackles, followed by Colby Henderson, 11; Taylor Johnson, 11; Sean Elliott, 10, and Boger, 10.
The Mustangs nowl take on Saint Xavier University this Saturday at 12 noon at Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City, for the right to advance to the Championship game.
