Dress for the season

Monday, December 10, 2012

As the annual winter weather and accompanying frigid temperatures descend upon us and we focus on making sure our homes, offices, and vehicles are ready for another long winter, we shouldn't fail to think about ourselves and proper clothing whenever we must venture out in frigid temperatures and wet conditions.

Dressing for the season is important for kids and adults alike, and can help you avoid illness. Therefore, we suggest:

*Wear loose, lightweight warm clothes in layers.

*Remove layers as necessary to avoid perpiration and subsequent chill.

*Outer garments should be tightly woven, water repellent, and hooded.

*Wear a hat. Half of your body heat loss can be from the head.

*Cover your mouth to protect your llungs from extreme cold.

*Mittens, snug at the wrist, are better than gloves.

*Try to stay dry.

*Avoid extended periods of time in the outdoors when frigid temperatures abound. Be sure to take breaks and go inside to warm up.

Dressing appropriately for the weather, even if you go from the house to the garage to covered parking and into the workplace, is very important, considering you could get stuck in traffic or involved in an accident on slick roadways that would require you to brave the elements.

Even that quick trip to the post office or grocery store can prove treacherous when you least expect it, so dress appropriately and enjoy the winter weather as best you can.
