Wreaths across Cherokee County

Thursday, December 13, 2012

The Cherokee Pilot Rock Chapter NSDAR placed wreaths at seven county cemeteries recently. The wreaths were placed to remember and honor veterans and the sacrifices they have made to protect our country and our freedom.

The group was inspired by another organization, Wreaths Across America, whose members decorate veteran graves across the United States, including the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at Van Meter. Their website is www.wreathsacrossamerica.org.

The Pilot Rock Chapter has assisted the seven cemeteries in erecting directories to aid visitors in finding gravesites. The cemeteries are Oak Hill, Washta, Quimby, Aurelia, Afton township, Cedar township and Liberty township.

The wreaths were placed near the directories. Chapter members are considering making this an annual project for these cemeteries as well as others that erect directories in the future.

For photos of the local project,, see the "December Area Happenings" Photo Gallery.
