HARTLEY - The Alta-Aurelia boys played an outstanding first half of basketball against host Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn here on Saturday, holding the Hawks to just two points in the second quarter as the Warriors moved to a 19-14 halftime advantage. The final score of the game was 52-36 in HMS' favor.
In the 2nd half, it was unfortunately a different story for Coach Randy Bissen's Warriors. "Offensively ," said the coach, "we didn't snap the basketball and set good screens and we weren't ready to shoot. Defensively, we let a couple of their shooters get going, and our turnovers led to easy baskets for them."
"Once again," summarized Coach Bissen, "Our effort was great, it was just one of those nights where we couldn't get our shots to fall."
Jayden Van Berkum- led the Warriors' scoring attack with nine points, while Colton Ballantyne and Ross Friedrich each scored six points and Tyler Larson added five.
Friedrich also had four steals on defense and Ballantyne had two steals and dished out three steals. Zach Sliefert had four steals, and Mitchel McDonald led the team on the boards with eight rebounds.
Alta-Aurelia, now 3-5, resumes play after the Christmas break when they travel to Burnside on January 4 to take on Southeast Grand in Twin Lakes conference play.
