ALTA - There seemed to be a lid on the basket for the Alta-Aurelia boys at the start of the team's basketball game here Tuesday against Newell-Fonda, as the Warriors scored just 3 points in the first quarter, while N-F was putting up 24 points themselves.
Although things improved some for the Warriors, the Mustangs continued to build on their early lead and wound up winning the game by a 55-25 score, the sixth straight win for Newell-Fond after an opening game loss to Spencer and a narrow two point loss to #2 ranked St. Mary's of Storm Lake. In an oddity, the game saw only two points scored in the 4th quarter, both by Alta-Aurelia.
The Warriors were led in scoring by Titus Letzring, who scored six points, while Jayson VanHaaften and Jaden VanBerkum each scored five. Ben Wetherell led the Warriors on the boards, as he grabbed seven rebounds. Zach Sliefert had five steals and Ross Friedrich four for the Warriors and Friedrich also dished out six assists.
#3-ranked Newell-Fonda won the girls game by a 61-21 score, but details of that game were not made available.
The Alta-Aurelia boys have a 3-6 mark and the girls are 2-8 as they head into the Christmas break, and the teams will resume play at SE Webster Grand on Friday, Jan. 4.
