Low water crossing - A low water crossing on the dry Maple River in Afton Township in Cherokee County, just south of Highway 3, provided a great location for Rusty Grashoff to pick up his visiting grandchildren, who took the opportunity to walk along the dried up Maple River - a condition Grashoff said that he had never seen before in his lifetime.

Young explorers - Walking in the dry Maple River east of Cherokee recently were Joshua Berg of Nora Springs and Alex and Adam Grashoff of Elk Point S.D. The young explorers discovered many animal tracks in the dried up river bed.
