South O'Brien girls deck MMC

PAULLINA - The South O'Brien girls pocketed a quick 22-10 lead in the first quarter and then sealed the deal with an 18-3 scoring advantage in the third frame to put away a young Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn team 68-33 in War Eagle Conference basketball action here Friday night.

Rachel Struve paced the Wolverines with 19 points, followed by Hannah Schueder with 11, and Leta Wester 10. Heather Hoefling tallied 10 points and Sarah Dreckman eight to lead the Eagle scoring.

Sarah Bird led MMC in rebounding with five boards, and Hoefling grabbed four. Struve notched a double-double performance with 10 rebounds, and Emily Riedemann and Shay Lund snagged six apiece to lead SOS to a 34-19 board dominance.

The winners meshed 25-45 field goals to record a sizzling 56 percent shooting clip, while MMC made just 13-50 shots for 26 percent. SOS netted 20-27 free throws, and MMC sank 8-16.

Mikayla Hintz totaled nine assists and four steals to lead the Wolverines in those categories, while Alissa McDermott had three assists to pace MMC.

The 1-9 MMC girls host Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Friday night, while South O'Brien (7-5) plays at West Sioux in Hawarden.
