Ila Mae Chettinger, 96, of Waterloo, died at Friendship Village Retirement Center on Sunday, January 6, 2013.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Waterloo First United Methodist Church. Burial will be held at 2:30 p.m. at the Garnavillo Cemetery, Garnavillo. Visitation will take place today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Locke Funeral Home, 233-6138. Memorial may be addressed to Friendship Village. Condolences may be left at www.LockeFuneralHome.com.

She was born September 7, 1916 in Zimmerman, Minnesota, daughter of Samuel and Minnie Backer Emmons.

She married Gerald "Chet" Chettinger June 13, 1935 in Garnavillo. He died October 27, 1992.

Mrs. Chettinger graduated from Lamont High School, received a BA in Education at Upper Iowa University, and her Masters in Education from University of Northern Iowa.

She worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing during WWII, taught all grades in country schools in Fayette and Clayton Counties, and taught 3rd grade in Arlington in the 1950's, and at Irving Elementary School in Waterloo from 1968 to 1980.

Mrs. Chettinger was a member of Waterloo First United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Covenant Medical Center.

She is survived by son: Gerald LaVerne (Lois) Chettinger, Cherokee; daughter: Carol Gladys (Bob) Schamberger, Garland, Texas; six Grandchildren; 12 Great-grandchildren; and six great great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Chettinger was preceded by: daughter Shirley Ann Chettinger; grandsons Robert LaVerne Schamberger and Bryon Schamberger; seven brothers and sisters: Esther Burington, Helen Davis Jenkins, Birdie Cerson, Lizzie Vaprodt, Clarence Emmons, Cecil Emmons, and James Emmons.
