Braves split Lakes double dual

Monday, January 21, 2013

16 forfeits limit wrestling action

The Cherokee Braves wrestlers split a Lakes Conference double dual on Senior Night in Cherokee Thursday, beating Hull Western Christian 42-36, and losing 45-34 to Storm Lake.

With the Braves without a handful of wrestlers battling injuries and/or illness, the matches were quickies, with the Cherokee-HWC dual featuring nine forfeits, and the Braves-Storm Lake dual seven forfeits. All told, the Braves totaled four forfeits against the Wolfpack, and five against the Tornadoes.

There were 12 matches total contested in the double dual.

Pin winners for Cherokee included Drake Bechtel at 106, Alex Sordrager at 220, Andy Pitts at 138, Skyler Mongan at 195, and Micheal Rosewall at 285.

"Tonight was a hard night, but everyone came to wrestle ready or not," said Cherokee coach Austin Todd.

"Although we are not completely satisfied with the final outcome of the night, it was a dual to be proud of. We are in a struggle right now fighting off sickness, injuries, and skin infections holding out a few wrestlers and adding strain to the already strenuous sport.

"Great performers of the night were Drake Bechtel, Hunter Morrow, Alex Sordgrager , and Micheal Rosewall as they were all double winners. Senior Skylar Mongan was able to finish his dual season with a pin."
