Pancake Race won't pan out this year

Thursday, January 31, 2013

Devoted organizers of Cherokee's annual Great Pancake Day Race advise that this year's event will not be held due to ongoing refurbishing of the host, St. Paul United Methodist Church in Cherokee, extensively damaged by fire one year ago. The Fellowship Hall and Kitchen in the lower level where the benefit pancake meal and ceremonies were held are still in the process of being renovated after being gutted in the fire. St. Paul's organizers said the popular Cherokee tradition will be revived "bigger and better" in 2014 on March 4 on "Fat Tuesday," the day before Ash Wednesday. Relatedly, St. Paul's will collect a special offering Sunday, Feb. 17, benefiting the two local Food Pantries who have in the past received the funds raised by the event, and will again in 2014.
