LAURENS - The Alta-Aurelia boys battled a tough 1-3-1 zone defense by Laurens-Marathon throughout a close, low-scoring game here on Tuesday, and the Warriors needed an overtime period to finally edge the Chargers by a 42-41 score.
Alta-Aurelia coach Randy Bissen that the Warrior players had to be patient and get good shots due to the zone defense. Jayson Vanhaaften and Ross Friedrich made some outside shots and Mitchel McDonald "did an outstanding job around the basket and on the glass," said the coach, who added, "This game was a big confidence booster. Our guys kept their composure down the stretch and Friedrich made a nice pass to Mitchel to get him to the free throw line to win the game."
Friedrich scored 12 points to lead Warrior scoring, and he also had five steals on defense and dished out five assists. Vanhaaften scored 11 points, and McDonald scored eight and cleared 14 rebounds.
The Warriors travel to Remsen to face St. Mary's on Monday, then host #2 Storm Lake St. Mary's at Alta on Tuesday before wrapping up their regular season on Friday against River Valley at Correctionville.
