Thanks for the memories

Although the Maryhill school was closed 47 years ago, a large group of former students and their families attended a fond farewell ceremony for their elementary school at Maryhill on Sunday afternoon. Built in 1895 to accomomdate large numbers of pioneer families arriving by way of the Illinois Central railroad and other migratory trends of that time, it served families with basic education for more than 70 years, closing in 1967. It was staffed by Franciscan Sisters for most of those years. Pictured here with those gathered for the occasion is Father Gene Sitzmann, back right, long-time pastor of the parish who is now retired at Maryhill. Schoon Construction of Cherokee will conduct the demolition by month's end. Photo contributed
