Warriors win grid opener, 20-7
AURELIA - The Alta-Aurelia Warriors posted a 20-7 non-district win Friday over Pocahontas Area in this season's only varsity game on the storied Valor Field gridiron here.
The Warriors rolled up 207 yards in 39 attempts on the ground and gained another 53 yards on nine pass completions. Junior Kale Nelson engineered the Warriors' attack, completing 9 of 14 pass attempts without an interception.
Sophomore Bryce Radke led a balanced running attack, gaining 58 yards on 14 attempts, while senior Michael Stender gained 43 yards on five attempts, including a 34-yard touchdown run. Fellow senior Junior Molina also gained 43 yards, on four rushing attempts, and he scored a 38-yard TD. Junior Jesse Boehner garnered the other Warrior tally, scampering 30 yards for the score. Boehner gained 37 yards on three carries. Senior Manuel Murillo gained 16 yards on seven carries for the Warriors. Senior Mitchel McDonald snared three of QB Nelson's aerials for 20 yards, and Radke and junior Jeremiah Ruby each caught two balls.
The sophomore Radke also led the Warrior defensive effort with 10 total tackles, while junior Connor Napierela 's nine tackles included five solo tackles for a loss of yardage. Senior Michael Stender had eight total tackles.
The Warriors (1-0) take on Sioux Central Friday in their District opener at Albert City.
