Boys 4th, girls 8th in conference meet

BURNSIDE - The Twin Lakes Conference staged its annual conference championship track and field meet here on Tuesday, and the South Central Calhoun boys topped Manson Northwest Webster for the team championship,172.5 - 151, in a battle of two strong teams.

Pocahontas Area finished third with 82 points, followed by Alta-Aurelia (75), Sioux Central (60.5) and East Sac County (55).

Pocahontas Area won the girls team title with 140 points, followed by South Central Calhoun (111.5), Sioux Central (103), Prairie Valley (83.3) and East Sac County (77.33).

The Alta-Aurelia boys got first place finishes from Mitchell Fritz in the 400 meters, in a Class 1A State best time of 50.55, and the Medley Relay team of Trey Sliefert, Connor Napierala, Trenton Delp and Fritz, with a time of 3:49.71.

Fritz also captured second place in the 200 meters, with a time of 22.76, and Jake Berg finished 2nd in the shot put with a heave of 43'3.5". Third place finishers for the Warriors included Bryce Radke in the 400 hurdles, with a time of 59.55, and the 4 x 100 team of Sliefert, Napierala, Michael Gonzalez and Fritz, with a time of 46.25.

Alta-Aurelia coach Wendell Larson commented, "The Twin Lakes Conference is a very tough conference, but we certainly held our own tonight. Points were very hard to come by."

The coach had high praise for Fritz for his "outstanding night, and said he was "very pleased with all our boys tonight. We had 12 season's bests tonight on a very windy night. As we come down to the home stretch for the season it will be exciting to see what we can accomplish."

The Alta-Aurelia girls finished in 8th place in the girls team standings, and their best finishes were three 3rd places - by DJ Flores in the 100 meter hurdles (16.96); the 4 x 100 Relay (Maddy Duhn, Erica Lockin, DJ Flores and Bailey Duhn), with a time of 53.64; and the 4 x 200 Relay (Maddy Duhn, Paige Sivinski, Erica Lockin, Bailey Duhn), with a time of 1:54.52.

The Warriors' 4 x 800 Relay (Emily Beukelman, Cynthia Placido, Emma Kaskey, Hanna Westphal), and Shuttle Hurdle Relay (Micah Barnes, Andrea Heschke, Izzy Hinkelday, DJ Flores) both finished 4th, with times of 12:08.35 and 1:19.58, respectively.
