Sex offender apprehended

Corey West, a sex offender who fled the CCUSO transition program at Cherokee on Sunday, Aug. 3, was captured on Friday by U.S. Marshals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.Authorities in northwest Iowa had been searching for the man, who absconded from a sex offender transition release program, for five days.

The Iowa Department of Human Services reported last week that the 42-year-old West absconded early on Sunday, August 3. He did not return from his place of employment and was last seen in the Storm Lake area. Authorities say he

West was ordered into a civil commitment program, located on the grounds of the Cherokee Mental Health Institute, in 2011, and he became eligible for the transition release program in the fall of 2013.

The program provides long-term inpatient treatment for violent sexual predators who have served their prison terms, but are considered likely to commit further offenses.
