MMC nips River Valley in opener

CORRECTIONVILLE - Quarterback Jacob Spieler connected with Mitch Edman on a 21-yard touchdown pass, and Conner Holmes rushed for a 37-yard score to lead Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn to a hard-fought 13-6 season opening win over River Valley in 8-player football action here Friday night.

Played under a steady rainfall that hampered both team's offenses, the game was marked by the timely Eagle scores and stout defenses exhibited by both clubs.

River Valley tallied its lone TD on a sweet 38-yard pass from quarterback Wyatt Fitch to Hunter Casey. Fitch completed 5-15 passes for 94 yards, with Casey leading receiver with four catches for 67 yards. Jimmy Cockburn caught one pass for 27 yards.

River Valley rushed the ball 26 times for 27 yards against the stiff MMC defense. Sam Briese rushed 10 times for 25 yards and Fitch 12 times for a negative three yards.

For the Eagles, Spieler was 5-12 passing for 28 yards, with Holmes catching three , and Casey two. MMC rushed 52 times for 277 yards, with Holmes leading the way with 18 totes for 150 yards, and Erdman 19 hauls for 98 yards.

Leading tacklers for MMC were Ben McDaniel 15, Isaiah Petersen seven, and Tyler Schuck and Sam Hueser six apiece.

River Valley tackle totals were not submitted. Justin Beeson had an interception for the Wolverines he returned for 18 yards.

MMC hosts Coon Rapids-Bayard Friday night, and River Valley plays at Remsen-Union.
