Morrow, Zeimen champs at S-O
Four area teams compete; Ridge View, A-A nab 3 individual firsts
SIBLEY - The Cherokee Braves crowned two champions at Saturday's Sibley-Ocheyedan Wrestling Invitational, with Hunter Morrow winning the 152-pound division, and Tyler Zeimen claiming the 160-pound weight class.
Morrow posted a 2-0 match record on the day, pinning Jayd Payne of West Lyon in :43, and defeating Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn's Derek Erdman 5-0.
Zeimen won both his matches by fall to win the title, pining Jake Blankers of MOC-Floyd Valley in 1:20, and pinning Taeric Ezzell of West Lyon in 4:18.
Matthew Stines placed third for Cherokee at 126 pounds, beating Pedro Rodriguez of Sibley-Ocheyedan 7-6, losing 17-2 to Connor Ascherl of MOC-FV, pinning Zach Kenny of Ridge View in 2:39, and pinning Colten Larson of Alta-Aurelia in 2:33.
Kade Jurgensen was fourth for the Braves at 145 pounds, losing by fall to Garrett Saylor of S-O in :33, pinning Zach Lieb of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in :34, and losing by fall to Peyton Boyle of Ridge View in 3:00.
Isaac LaFleur was fourth for Cherokee at 170 pounds, losing by fall to Matthew Peck of MMC in 5:05, pinning Caleb Renteria of Alta-Aurelia in 1:33, and losing by fall a second time to Peck of MMC in 1:39.
Collin Lundy placed fifth with a 1-2 mark at 138, losing by fall to Michael Anderson of MOC-FV in 3:17, losing by fall to John Tuttle of A-A in 1:09, and pinning Jake Hupke of West Lyon in 1:29.
Other Cherokee wrestlers who competed were Adrian Gittau at 106, Collin Johnson at 132, Jaron Wood at 195, and Charlie Wych at 220.
"For a small tournament this is an extremely tough tournament. Every team here has had a strong tradition of tough wrestling," noted Cherokee coach Austin Todd.
"I was proud on how this team competed throughout the day, especially with a rough start in the first round. Hunter Morrow and Tyler Zeimen really shined in this tournament being crowned champions at their respective weight classes. Matt Stines, Kade Jurgensen, and Isaac LaFleur also wrestled really well in this tournament battling to get to the 3rd place match."
Host Sibley-Ocheyedan won the team title with 200.5 points, followed by MOC-FV 184.5, MMC 123, Ridge View 122, A-A 120, West Lyon 103, Cherokee 92, GT-RA 73.

"The coaches were happy with the effort and happy with the improvement we gained from last week. Many of our inexperienced kids are making strides as we continue to improve on a daily basis," said Coach Scott Phelps.

Alta- Aurelia coach Mike Fry commented, "Overall, the Warriors had two champions, Cooper Siebrecht (106) and Skylar Solko (120). We were down a couple guys due to flu and ACT testing, but we were right in the mix. We made some mistakes ,and will look to improve as the year goes on."
