Debris can turn deadly

Wednesday, April 15, 2015

As the weather warms, we see an increasing number of vehicles hauling yard and garden waste or large, bulky items to area landfills.

The need for drivers to secure their loads can be a matter of life or death.

According to the Foundation for Traffic Safety, there are about 25,000 crashes that are caused each year and there are 80 to 90 deaths (in North America) as the result of debris coming loose from vehicles.

Many landfills in Iowa have strict policies for arriving with a secure load and those drivers who don't can be charged a service fee of between $10 and $100, depending on the size of the vehicle.

The fine is the least of the public's concerns about improperly secured loads.

For the sake of everyone on the road, people need to secure the loads properly.
