Have a happy Fourth!
Trips, family picnics and fireworks are among the activities coming up this weekend for people across the country.
Safety awareness should also be a Fourth of July tradition. Traffic is always heavy near the Fourth of July holiday. Unlike for some years, this Fourth of July falls on a day that creates a three day weekend so traffic may be particularly heavy and drivers should be particularly cautious.
Fireworks cause injuries every year. Even fireworks that are legal in Iowa, such as sparklers, can be dangerous. Small children should always be supervised by adults when using fireworks.
As for those fireworks that are not legal in Iowa, perhaps families should forgo their annual outing to South Dakota and attend a community fireworks display instead. A fireworks display will take place on July 4 at Koser Spring Lake Park at dusk.
As well as teaching children about safety, the Fourth of July is time for parents to talk to their children about the founding of our country and the legacy left by our founding fathers 239 years ago.
The signers of the Declaration of Independence risked everything for freedom and many citizens have made the ultimate sacrifice since then to guarantee our freedoms.
We wish everyone a safe, happy, and meaningful Fourth of July.
