Vaccinations are needed
Iowa needs to join the states of Mississippi, West Virginia and California by dropping a religious exemption for vaccinations. California took that action following a measles outbreak.
Children in schools need to be vaccinated unless they have a legitimate medical reason not to be.
Unvaccinated children in schools present a public health risk, including to children who have genuine medical reasons that prevent their vaccination. Many such children have weakened immune systems and are at risk of fatal consequences from exposure to infection. Their risk grows exponentially when they are surrounded by substantial numbers of unvaccinated children.
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the right to freely practice religion "does not include liberty to expose the community or the child to communicable disease."
