An American perspective on aristocracy

Queen Elizabeth has now become the longest reigning monarch in British history, surpassing Queen Victoria. People who fawn over those bestowed with wealth and celebrity as a condition of birth are enchanted by the details of the British royal family.

Then there are those of us who view the whole spectacle as a ridiculous anachronism.

The American ideal is personal advancement through achievement rather than receiving position in society as the result of an entrenched ruling class structure.

Unfortunately, America is moving ever closer to an entrenched class structure, even in the absence of the trappings of monarchy.
