Leath critics overreact

Monday, September 28, 2015

At a recent football game in Ames, Iowa State University President Steven Leath appeared on the football field with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump. The two appeared together in newspaper photos and on at least one central Iowa TV station.

Contrary to a conclusion some people drew, the appearance together was not an endorsement of Trump by Leath .

A statement issued later by Leath said, in part, "As president, I do not and will not endorse any candidate, but I will accept any opportunity to discuss higher education policy, promote Iowa State University and advance our mission of providing an affordable, accessible, high quality education. I welcome the opportunity to discuss these priorities with members of any political party."

Should state officials in non-political positions be careful to avoid any appearance of partisan favoritism, even to the point of conducting meetings with candidates for office out of sight of the public?

No, we don't think so.
