Storm Lake swimmers take pair of duals
SIOUX CITY-The Storm Lake High School Girls' Swim Team ended their regular season with a pair of dual meet wins at Sioux City North High School October 20th.
In their third dual of the season with Spencer, with each team having won once, the Tornadoes swam well and came away with the win. The final score was 51 to 40. The score versus Metro was 58 to 33, and Spencer beat Metro by the same score. This gives the Tornadoes a final dual meet record of 11-1 this season.
In beating Spencer, the Tornadoes won every race except the 200 Medley Relay and the 100 yd backstroke. Metro won the 500 yd freestyle race during the meet for their only event win.
Storm Lake Coach Jodi Mongan said her team's win was definitely a team effort, with all the team's top performers putting in good performances to get the points the team needed.
Keely Soellner and Grace Meier each won two individual events during the meet. Keely's wins were in the 50 and 100 yd freestyle events, which she swam for the sole purpose of earning the team some points, but she also broke her own records in both events. In the 50 yd freestyle she beat her previous best time of 25.21 in setting a new school mark of 25.09, and n the 100 yd freestyle the old record was 55.04, and the new time to beat is 54.4. Grace had Meier posted big wins in the 200 yd Individual Medley, with her season best time of 2:26.75, and in the 100 yd breaststroke, in which she narrowly got beat last time, she had a commanding 1:14.69 finish for 1st place this time out.
Destini Oehlertz and Kylie Mongan were the next big contributors. Destini had a first place finish in the 100 yd butterfly, where she narrowly missed setting a new school record, with her finish of 1:03.82, and in the 100 yd backstroke she had a season best time of 1:01.07, beating her own previous school record of 1:01.41, while coming in 2nd in the event.
Kylie won the 200 yd freestyle event near the beginning of the meet with her personal best time of 2:06.83, and she also finished just behind Destini in the 100 yd backstroke race, ending up 3rd with her 1:05.26 finish. Emily Beukelman added to the team's efforts with two 2nd place finishes - one being behind a Metro swimmer and one being behind a teammate. In the 100 yd butterfly race, Emily finished right behind Destini Oehlertz in 1:06.34, and in the 500 yd freestyle event she posted her season - best time of 5:56.64, which kept her ahead of any Spencer swimmers and earned the team great points toward that dual meet score.
The freestyle relay teams clinched the win against Spencer by winning both of their events. The team of Kylie Mongan, Joy Bral, Destini Oehlertz and Keely Soellner posted a winning time of 1:42.07 in the 200 yd event, and in the 400 yd event their 3:44.76 was a season best time. In the 400 yd event, the other SL relay team of Alli Graff, Taylor Richardson, Marie Hardt and Emily Beukelman added to the scoring effort by coming in 3rd in the race.
The 200 yd Medley Relay team also kept the scoring close early on by placing 3rd in that event, with Alli Graff, Joy Bral, Emily Beukelman and Grace Meier finishing in a time of 2:02.52.
Coach Mongan said, "About half the team will continue to practice and move on to the Regional meet in Fort Dodge on October 31st. That will mark the end of the season for most of the rest of the swimmers, with a few of the girls hoping to qualify for the State Meet with their Regional performances."
