Let's consider a change
Five bills are now before the Iowa legislature calling for nonpartisan elections for the county offices of treasurer, sheriff, recorder, county attorney and auditor.
Our first impression of the proposed change is that it is a good idea. There is not a Republican way or a Democratic way to carry out the duties of any of those offices.
We are not quite ready to make an endorsement of the change, but the proposal deserves serious discussion and consideration.
There might also be a case for making the seats on the county board of supervisors nonpartisan, but the legislators apparently want to make that a separate issues.
There is value in a competitive political party process for the offices that provide administrative oversight of other government offices. The supervisors provide an anchor at the county level for the two- party system.
That may be the only anchor needed at the county level.
