GOP has only losing options

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

Delegates to the 2016 Republican National Convention have no moral obligation to support the nomination of Donald Trump as the Republican candidate for president if Trump does not have a first-ballot majority of delegates, even though Trump will inevitably have more delegates than any other candidate.

Lincoln was behind on the first two ballots at the Republican National Convention in 1860 before winning the third ballot and going on to win the presidency.

However, the Trump faction of the GOP will not unify behind someone they feel is a usurper of Trump's rightful position. These are angry citizens who feel they have been overlooked and lied to for decades.

But then there are also Republicans who will not unite behind Trump, who they regard as a hate mongering demagogue who has no loyalty to true conservative principles.

Either way, the Republican party remains hopelessly divided.
