Sun is a need - and a danger
People fearful of excessive exposure to the sun sometimes overdo avoidance of the sun or overdo use of sunscreen. They deny their bodies need of vitamin D and don't allow their skin to darken, which is a natural protective mechanism.
Certainly exposure to sun resulting in a painful burn is damaging to the skin, and the cumulative effect of such incidents over the years can result in skin cancer.
Limiting sun exposure is needed, especially for light skinned people who are first exposing areas of skin that have been covered over the winter months. During late spring and early summer, limiting time in direct sunlight and using sunscreen are necessary precautions.
However, people need to spend time outdoors and they need to expose their skin to sunlight in moderation.
