It has been more than a century since the Chicago Cubs won a World Series, and more than seven decades since they were even in the World Series.
The Cubs' win on Wednesday evening against the Cleveland Indians was all the sweeter, because it was a hard - fought, evenly - matched contest with a nail-biter of a seventh game, an 8 to 7 Cubs victory in 10 innings. The Cubs had won only one of the first four games in this series before winning the final three games.
Of course, the Indians deserve congratulations for making it to the series. The last series they won was in 1948, but they have been in a few since then. - the last before 2016 was in 1997.
It is so refreshing in this time of bitter domestic strife to see competitors strive for victory in an atmosphere of sportsmanship and mutual respect.
