I’m going to geek out for a second. Well, geek out more than I usually do. A few weekends ago, I went to Chicago for the annual C2E2 convention, a place for comics, games, and all other sorts of nerdery. Of course I dressed up for the con (I was Ness from Earthbound and the Super Smash Brothers series, if anyone was interested) and my brother, who went with, said “No one is going to recognize you and it’s a dumb costume.” I knew he was wrong, so I say “Don’t underestimate it. I will be among my people.” I was going to be among my people. So, we walk into the con. It is in the McCormick Center, a sprawling 5-story convention center of which C2E2 used all five floors. Not even five minutes in, I hear a little voice behind me. “Excuse me, can I take a picture with you?” I turn around and see a kid, probably about 9 or 10, dressed up in the exact same costume. We took a picture and, after he left, I turned to my brother. “I told you,” I said, “I’m among my people.”
That was a long winded way of getting to my actual point of the article which is COMIC CON! This Saturday, May 6th, we will be holding our first (annual?) Comic Con here at the library. Of course, our con will not be as expansive as C2E2, but, dang it, it will be just as much fun. We will have some awesome crafts (making capes and masks) among other things. Our Legos will be out for our young makers to play with. Gamer Brigade will be there with video games to play. There will be a scavenger hunt in the stacks with a super special prize. Don’t forget to wear a costume! It can be anybody from pop culture, so don’t just limit it to comic books. We will have our costume contest at 12:30 in the atrium.
Did I mention that we will have FREE COMICS? Oh yeah, we have those.
Events start at 11 and will end at 1 this Saturday. If you have any questions, let us know!
For our non-con attending patrons, don’t worry! Our desk will still be staffed and you can check out books. However, be aware that the library will most likely be louder than usual, so make sure you plan ahead if you’re here for studying.
Looking ahead, don’t forget that we will be closed on Saturday, May 25th through Monday, May 27th for Memorial Day.
